Vegas Pop - 50,000,000 Elvis Presley Fans Can Be Wrong: Manilow Is the Man

When people think of crazy music fans, old TV images of girls pulling their hair out at an Elvis Presley concert or fainting at the [sight] of The Beatles come to mind. Then there are Jimmy [Buffett]'s Parrot Heads with their props and costumes that proudly defy interpretation. Perhaps the most overlooked crazed fan base is the Fanilows, fans of Barry Manilow. Even though Fanilows were 'outed' on an episode of 'Will & Grace,' they still largely remain unrecognized in the shadows of fandom. Full article can be found by clicking here

"Barry Manilow: Looks Like He Made It" by Pat Michaels

It was an almost nightly duty for Barry Manilow. He'd leave his home in the ancient Las Palmas district of Palm Springs and head for the airport. There, his private jet would whisk him to Las Vegas. A short time later, the man who writes the songs that make the whole world sing would take to the stage of the Las Vegas Hilton, perform for two hours before a jam-packed, sold-out crowd of 3,000 and then head back to his jet. "I'm back watching the end of Jay Leno every night," he told Palm Springs Life.

Barry In Vegas April 17th to 21st 2007

Attending Barry's shows last week at the Las Vegas Hilton was a large group of fans from the UK. Barry added in some extra special songs at the Wednesday night show opening with "I'm Coming Back" from the Here at the Mayflower CD. Barry also included the following songs, "Sweet Heaven", "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed" and a very special version of " Please Don't Be Scared". Barry surprised everyone by picking someone from the audience to join him on stage to sing "Can't Smile Without You" as a duet. The lucky lady was Lesley from the UK and she did a great job, even managing to introduce her daughter to Barry who was also there in the audience to see the show.

Unfortunately, due to last minute technical difficulties the Friday night show had to be cancelled. However, Barry pulled out all the stops for the Saturday night show and included some stunning versions of the following songs, "I'm Coming Back", "Sweet Heaven", "Blue Velvet" and "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed". Barry picked another lucky lady from the audience to duet with him on "Can't Smile Without You" this time it was Suzanne who was also over from the UK. Barry closed the final show of the week with a great high energy version of "Dancing In The Aisles"/"Dancing In The Streets"/"It's A Miracle".

Barry especially thanked the fans for coming all the way from the UK to see him and it was clear that he was very grateful for all the support given to him over the years. Everyone made Barry aware just how much they had enjoyed the shows and the atmosphere in the Hilton showroom was electric! Oh.. and in case you haven't already heard...Barry was wearing the leather trousers from the 1984 tour!

A HUGE Thank You to Barry for the very special shows last week...here's to the next time!

Barry Manilow Celebrates Two Years in Las Vegas

Congratulations to Barry Manilow on the second anniversary of his residency at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Hard to believe it was back on February 23, 2005 that Barry (seen above with Hilton CEO and general manager Rudy Prieto) opened Music and Passion at the resort. But it's not hard to believe it has been nothing but sold-out performances ever since! The irony in all this is that his 2004 tour 'One Night Live One Last Time' played to 250,000 fans in 23 British and American arenas signaling the end of his concert career. But, then came the surprise Vegas show and an even bigger surprise in winning an Emmy Award for his PBS TV special filmed there. Also, his 'The Greatest Songs of the Fifties' not only debuted at #1 on the charts but went platinum selling over one million units. The Hilton promptly extended his contract through to 2008 to celebrate the achievements! Barry's follow-up album 'The Greatest Songs of the Sixties' won him the biggest sales week of his career when it debuted in the #2 spot of Billboard's Top 200!

"We congratulate Barry Manilow on a great year of success," said Ken Ciancimino, Hilton executive vice president. "Barry's phenomenal appeal and his staying power as our long-term headliner make him an enduring symbol in this erratic Las Vegas entertainment market." (Click here to see the enormous, hand-painted mural of Barry, which hangs outside of the Hilton!). Story by Robin Leach.
