LOS ANGELES (April 29, 2009) — The
year was 1978. Barry Manilow was playing
outdoor amphitheaters around the U.S.
and getting ready to head overseas. The
Greek Theatre in Los Angeles asked if
Manilow would play not one, but two
straight weeks for more than 72,000
fans. Being new on the scene and anxious
to compete with the major networks, HBO
got involved and created its first
two-hour musical special, “Manilow: Live
at the Greek Theatre.” The powerhouse
performance garnered a huge viewing
audience, becoming the first cable
special to beat the networks in ratings.
Thirty years later, Manilow’s HBO
special makes its long-awaited DVD debut
with BARRY MANILOW: IN CONCERT – THE
LEGENDARY 1978 CONCERT AT THE GREEK
THEATRE. The digitally restored and
remastered DVD will be available in time
for Mother’s Day from Rhino Records, in
association with STILETTO New Media,
exclusively at www.manilow.com. As an
added bonus, each DVD will be
accompanied by the 28-page 1978 Summer
Tour Program. This limited edition
package is available May 5. BARRY MANILOW: IN CONCERT – THE
LEGENDARY 1978 CONCERT AT THE GREEK
THEATRE captures the momentous occasion
at the outset of his distinguished
career which led him to perform before
millions of people around the world for
the next 30 years and continues today.
The nearly two-hour concert spotlights
pop hits, lushly arranged romantic
ballads, as well as a medley of ’40s
boogie tunes that includes a cover of
Louis Jordan’s “Jumpin’ And Jivin’” and
Manilow’s own “Avenue C.” “People were literally sitting in the
trees,” Manilow recalls fondly. “Words
simply cannot describe the energy and
incredible magic in the air that night.”
The concert was recorded near the end
of Manilow’s In Concert tour for Even
Now, his fourth multi-platinum album in
a row. On the charts for a year, the
album included the hits “Can’t Smile
Without You” and the title track, both
of which Manilow performed at The Greek
Theatre. For “Copacabana (At The Copa),”
another huge hit from the album, the
stage is transformed into a period set
by the show’s magnificent art director
Ed Flesh. Shortly after the special was
aired, Manilow received a Grammy for
that song. Much of the Greek Theatre concert is
drawn from songs that first appeared on
Manilow’s back-to-back, triple-platinum
albums—Trying To Get That Feeling (1975)
and This One’s For You (1976). Manilow
revisits those albums, delivering
memorable performances of “Weekend In
New England” and “Looks Like We Made
It,” plus his #1 pop smash, “I Write The

year's BBC Proms in the Park - the annual
extravaganza held in London's Hyde Park, and
broadcast live on BBC Radio 2, that allows
music lovers to enjoy the magic and passion
of the much-loved Last Night of the Proms.
It is
to be his only UK concert in 2009.
With worldwide record sales exceeding 75
million, his work as a singer, songwriter,
arranger
and producer has cemented Barry Manilow as a
leading and much adored legend in the
entertainment world. With hits such as
'Mandy', 'Can't Smile Without You' and
'Copacabana',
combined with his Las Vegas residencies
selling out instantly, his success has
become a
benchmark in popular music.

rock groups start the entertainment in the

Stones
entertain with their individual take on The
Rolling Stones and Gary Mullen and the Works
prepare audiences for the main event with
the best of Queen. This year's Proms in the
Park
follows the success of last year's event,
which featured Sharleen Spiteiri, Jose
Carreras and
Lesley Garrett.
Now an integral part of the UK's musical
calendar, BBC Proms in the Park is hosted,
for the 13th year, by Sir Terry Wogan, in
Hyde Park. The event, supported by NS&I
(National Savings & Investments) on Saturday
12 September is one of five major outdoor
shows staged by the BBC in five locations
across all four nations of the United
Kingdom - Glasgow, County Down, Salford,
Swansea and London - which bring the magic
of the Last Night of the Proms to many
thousands of music lovers around the UK.
The expanding programme of BBC Big Screens
takes Proms in the Park even further around
the country including Bradford (Centenary
Square), Bristol (Millennium Square),
Cardiff (The

The BBC Proms

Washington, D.C., May 28, 2009 – Emmy and Golden
Globe Award-winning actor Jimmy Smits returns to
host the biggest and brightest birthday party in
the country, “A Capitol Fourth,” featuring for
the first time ever, Barry Manilow, who will
both open and close the concert broadcast with a
stirring medley of hits and patriotic classics
along with the National Symphony Orchestra and
the Choral Arts Society of Washington. He will
be joined by the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin,
international pop sensation Natasha Bedingfield,
the Tony and Grammy Award-winning cast of Jersey
Boys, multi Grammy Award-nominee Michael
Feinstein and acclaimed classical pianist Andrew
von Oeyen. This star-studded cast will light up
the stage on the West Lawn of the United States
Capitol for the 29th annual A CAPITOL FOURTH
celebration featuring unrivaled musical
performances with the National Symphony
Orchestra under the direction of America’s
prince of pops Erich Kunzel. As a special treat
for the entire family, Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie
Monster, Oscar the Grouch and more of the
SESAME STREET gang will be on hand to
celebrate America’s 233rd birthday. The Muppets
will perform a musical medley of patriotic
favorites as well as iconic songs that we all
know and love from this breakthrough children’s
television series that is celebrating 40 years
of fun and learning. The multi-award winning
A CAPITOL FOURTH, featuring the most
spectacular fireworks display anywhere in the
nation, will be broadcast live in high
definition and commercial free on PBS
Saturday, July 4, 2009 from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. ET
(check local listings) before a concert audience
of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home,
as well as on National Public Radio and around
the world to our troops on the American Forces
Radio and Television Network.
The skyline of the nation’s capital will come
alive with vibrant and booming pyrotechnics, set
against silhouettes of national landmarks the
U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, the
Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. A Capitol
Fourth will capture this stunning fireworks
display from every vantage point with eighteen
TV cameras stationed around the city – including
the U.S. Capitol, the White House, the
Washington Monument and across the Potomac
River. Capping off the show will be a rousing
rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”
complete with live cannon fire provided by the
United States Army Presidential Salute Battery,
an audience favorite and now A Capitol
Fourth tradition. Also participating in
the event will be The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets,
The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, The U.S. Army
“Old Guard” Fife and Drum Corps and the Armed
Forces Color Guard provided by the Military
District of Washington, D.C.

again to host this year's special party to
celebrate our great country's birthday…and what
a 'guest list!' The music itself embraces so
many genres – we’ve got pop, we’ve got classical
and we’ve got soul. Throw in an anniversary
celebration of Sesame Street, topped off with
the biggest fireworks display around and we’ve
got quite a show!”
For A Capitol Fourth executive producer
Jerry Colbert has assembled an award-winning
production team that features the top Hollywood
talent behind some of television’s most
prestigious entertainment awards shows. This
includes Emmy award-winning producer Walter C.
Miller, American’s leading director and producer
of live programs including the Grammy Awards
and Country Music Awards;
award-winning director Paul Miller whose credits
include the Country Music Awards and
Saturday Night Live; and veteran
television writer Jon Macks, whose credits
include the Tonight Show with Jay Leno,
the Academy Awards and the Emmy
Awards. The program is a co-production of
Jerry Colbert of Capital Concerts and WETA,
Washington, D.C.
For more than 25 years, Capital Concerts has
produced the two major patriotic events at the
U.S. Capitol. In 1981, Colbert presented the
first PBS Fourth of July telecast with the
National Symphony Orchestra and guest artists
performing live from the West Lawn of the U.S.
Capitol. In 1990, he introduced the
National Memorial Day Concert. Since then,
both holiday specials have been honored with
over 80 awards including the New York Film
Festival Award, the Telly Award, the Golden Cine
Award, the Videographer Award, the National
Education Association Award, the Aurora Award,
the Christopher Award, the Communicator’s Award,
the AXIEM Award, the Omni Award and the Writer’s
Guild of America Award.
A Capitol Fourth 2009 is made possible by
grants from The Boeing Company, the National
Park Service, the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting, the Department of the Army, the
National Endowment for the Arts, PBS and public
television stations nationwide. Air travel is
provided by American Airlines.
Special to THE DESERT SUN
There are those who talk about helping and then
there are those who actually do. We are so
blessed in this community to have many to whom
this applies.
One of the Coachella Valley's luminaries stepped
to the fore, again, and with little fanfare
changed the lives of a group of students.
You might recall that in September, Barry
Manilow kicked off the Manilow Music Project
through encouraging individuals to get involved
in local schools by donating instruments or
music. He collected the needs from all of the
middle and high schools in the Coachella Valley
and donated $500,000 of instruments, stands and
music.
His message was clear: “Anyone can do it,
anyone. Just call your local elementary or high
school and talk to the music director. See what
they need. You can send them a set of drums or
used trumpets that are in your basement, and
that would make all the difference in the world
to young kids. That is the key, helping the kids
and making a difference in their lives
and their future.”
Providing the instruments was only the
beginning.
Members of the Palm Springs High School Jazz
Band recently boarded a bus provided by Manilow
for an overnight trip to Las Vegas, where the
members had an opportunity to meet the singer,
get a behind-the-scene glimpse on stage of the
workings of a legendary concertperformer and
become an enthralled audience member. They
shared his performance with more than 1,500 of
Manilow's adoring fans. Manilow paid all the
expenses.
Most of the students had never been to a live
concert of the magnitude of the “Ultimate
Manilow” show, and most had never stayed in a
hotel of the caliber of the Las Vegas Hilton. To
see the students interact with Mani low, for
them to feel his genuine interest in their
pursuit of music and for him to recognize them
during his show and talk about his home in the
Coachella Valley provided lifetime memories and
an amazing sense of pride.
The Manilow Music Project is about ensuring that
the music does not stop and that
studentscontinue to have the opportunity to
learn about the art and language of music,
allowing it to become a part of their soul.
Manilow met and exceeded these goals with his
gifts.
From a very appreciative group of students,
faculty, and parents, thank you, Barry, for
keeping the music alive.

TO ULTIMATE MANILOW AT LAS VEGAS HILTON 
School to his new show “ULTIMATE MANILOW: The
Hits” at the Las Vegas Hilton. These
students are direct recipients of instruments
donated from the Manilow Music Project.
In response to a cry for help from the local
area schools due to the critical condition that
music instruments were in, Manilow answered the
call. Knowing the value of a music
education, Manilow gathered together some of his
close friends and with cooperation of
the Yamaha Corporation, the Manilow Music
Project was born. 21 schools in the Coachella

In 1976, Manilow was the recipient of two CLIO Awards for his well-known television and radio commercial jingles. Annabelle Priftis will be one of the youngest
performers singing at the day
of mourning memorial service at Rod Laver Arena
today.
Priftis jumped at the
chance to perform after receiving a call from
the Premier's office last week,
and is thrilled to be performing Barry Manilow's
song One Voice with the Melbourne
Symphony Orchestra and the Korowa Anglican
Girls' School choir.
"I hope that the song
will reach out to those people affected and show
them that we are
united and that we care," Priftis, 15, told The
Sunday Age yesterday.
Her family, who live in
Ashburton, had been touched by the tragedy and
had donated to the
appeals, she said.
Priftis started
performing in front of shopping centre crowds at
the age of nine. She was a Teen
Idol grand finalist in 2006, but her biggest
performance came at Carols By Candlelight in
2007.
She is nervous but excited about performing in
front of Princess Anne, the Premier and the
Prime Minister.

– This morning,
musician and
songwriter Barry
Manilow fulfilled
his promise. At a
press conference
held at Palm Springs
High School,
Manilow, determined
to revitalize the
ailing music
programs in schools,
did so today by
giving over $500,000
in musical
instruments to
middle and high
schools in the Palm
Springs, Coachella
Valley and Desert
Sands Unified School
Districts. In response to
the needs of the
local public schools
and their severely
depleted music
programs, Manilow
gathered some
friends and formed
The Manilow Music
Project as part of
his nonprofit
Manilow Health and
Hope Fund. The
mission statement of
the Manilow Music
Project (MMP)
highlights the
importance of music
programs in our
schools and donates
instruments and
materials to school
music programs. The
MMP is sponsored by
Manilow, along with
Yamaha, Hal Leonard,
Toys ‘R Us
Children’s Fund, and
the non-profit
Manilow Fund For
Health and Hope. Manilow spoke to
the crowd of
teachers, school
administrators and
special guests in a
brief and
impassioned speech
of encouragement by
sharing how his own
life had been
profoundly changed
by music. Having
been given the gift
of a piano when he
was a young boy,
Manilow knows first
hand the power and
ability that music
carries in making
the difference in a
child’s life. Flanked by

Palm Springs, CA - The Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards have announced the first two honorees for their 15th annual event celebrating the 25th anniversary of its beneficiary, the Desert AIDS Project. The event will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday, February 21, 2009.
Barry Manilow will receive the Silver Anniversary Community Service Award, in recognition of his contributions to the Coachella Valley and beyond. His Manilow Fund for Health and Hope continues to be a major sponsor of AIDS Walks in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It also has funded programs to raise money for school musical instruments, homeless youth and those afflicted with disease. Barry Manilow answers school’s call for instruments

Barry Manilow, a Palm Springs resident for more than 20 years, attended a concert by three Palm Desert Middle School ensembles Thursday to draw attention to what a school music program could do with a little help from a friend.
Manilow donated $10,000 worth of musical instruments to the Palm Desert Middle School music program last month. Now the school's Band Boosters hopes to sustain itself and other school music programs with a March 1 "band-a-thon" fundraiser called Rock the House.
Band Boosters President Alison Harris said school bands from around the valley will take pledges for how many hours each band can play. They're also seeking corporate and media sponsors.
"I did Madison Square Garden a few months ago," Manilow told a crowd of parents at the school. "I think this was more exciting for me. You can call on me any time. I'll be there for you. Just keep going!"
Manilow's donation was his second such effort in just over a decade. He and friend Suzanne Somers each donated funds to College of the Desert in 1996 when its band instruments were stolen. They performed a benefit concert for COD at the McCallum Theatre in 1997 to begin a tradition of regular benefit concerts for local charities.
Manilow joined Palm Desert Middle School's cause after a school band concert in which a student's keyboard broke. The band teacher, Karen Dorn, told parents they needed a new keyboard, and one parent contacted Manilow, a personal friend.
"He went out of his way to request what we needed most," Dorn said. "I didn't know how much he wanted to donate, so I sent a list. I thought he'd get one or two things on the list. He got everything and extra. I am just overwhelmed."
Manilow said he hoped his effort would spur more donations.
"That's why I'm talking to you," he said. "I don't need any publicity about it, but I thought if I could just make the Coachella Valley aware, it's really easy to donate instruments to these high schools and middle schools and all the schools that need them, and look what you get!"
Manilow Closes 2007 With Top Twenty Tour and Top Ten Single.

Barry Manilow closes out 2007 once again ranking in the Top Twenty Concert Tours and with a top ten single. “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” hit the radio charts at #7 and marks Manilow’s 41st Top Forty single.

“Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” was the first single released from Manilow’s recent Platinum approaching Christmas album…..IN THE SWING OF CHRISTMAS. IN THE SWING OF CHRISTMAS was released exclusively by Hallmark and available only at Hallmark stores in the United States.
Manilow’s concert tour ranked at number 19 for the year. A good part of that was generated by Music & Passion….Manilow’s long running musical extravaganza at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Music & Passion just finished its third year at the Las Vegas Hilton and continues to break box-office records.
According to Rudy Prieto, CEO and general manager of the Las Vegas Hilton, “Barry’s show, which set a new standard for superstar headliners in Las Vegas when it debuted in 2005, has so exceeded all expectations that we’ve asked him to sign on for another year and perform through 2009.”

Rhino, in association with STILETTO Television, captures the artist’s triumphant return to his old neighborhood where he sings his biggest hits – and some great covers – from the decade that made him famous. An excellent companion to Manilow’s latest smash album, The Greatest Songs of the Seventies –which debuted in the Top 5 – this special finds Manilow focusing on the music of the decade when he became one of music’s biggest stars.
The hit-heavy set list is an inspired mix of Manilow’s own ’70s gems – including “Mandy,” “Could It Be Magic” and the especially fitting “New York City Rhythm” – along with other memorable ’70s smashes that Manilow makes his own.
